PERSPECTIVE DRAWING, THE SYSTEM OF PERSPECTIVE DRAWING AND 3D COMPUTER GRAPHICS
SUMMARY
The objective of this research is, through analysis of the causes for and the historical context of the emergence of 3D Computer Graphics (3D CG), to demonstrate its potential as a powerful instrument in Fine Arts.
The study consists of four chapters.
Chapter One is a historical survey of the development of the communicative, aesthetic and psychological functions of art. It summarizes the variety of approaches and ideas of authors who deal with basic aspects of the emergence of 3D Computer Graphics.
Chapter Two presents a contrastive analysis of the methods of representation of the external world, namely the Perspective Drawing and 3D Computer Graphics. It studies the cause/effect relationship in the creation of these methods, whilst also outlines their common characteristics and the influence of the traditional Perspective Drawing on the emergence of 3D Computer Graphics. The author presents the mathematical theories that provide algorithms for calculation of perspective and orthogonal projections in Computer Graphics.
Chapter Three studies some issues of light and shading, methods of shading and light/shade rendition using 3D Computer Graphics and Perspective Drawing. Shading is one of the most important factors in the perception of a 3D piece of work. This calls for some special attention in studying the methods of shading using the above-mentioned methods and their interrelation.
Chapter Four demonstrates the ability of 3D Computer Graphics to represent complex optical phenomena, the rendition of which, up to the present moment, has been out of the scope of ability for Perspective Drawing, due to the limitations posed by the traditional methods to study and represent these phenomena. In the course of study and analysis of the problems of 3D Computer Graphics and its relation to Fine Arts, the author tries to create a methodology for people who work in the area of Fine Arts and use 3D Computer Graphics in their work. Due to the variety of topics covered in this analysis, the methodology has become interdisciplinary in character.
The author accentuates the importance of understanding the basics of Perspective Drawing, which served as a basis for the emergence of 3D Computer Graphics. He also discusses some aspects of interchangeability of 3D Computer Graphics and Perspective Drawing. It allows for the use of 3D Computer Graphics in the study of optical phenomena that are of interest to Perspective Drawing.
